Girl Talk Series: Why Are You Attracted to Certain Men?

Before anything else, choose a man after God’s own heart—one who honors the Most High not only in words but in discipline, restraint, and obedience. A man who understands covenant will not rush intimacy, but will wait for marriage, valuing you beyond the flesh. A king is not defined by status, but by character, leadership, and reverence for God. Attraction must begin with alignment, not just desire.

Many women believe attraction is purely emotional or physical, but it is deeply neurological and spiritual. The men you feel drawn to are often reflections of patterns formed in your mind, shaped by experience, environment, and sometimes unresolved wounds. Attraction is not random—it is a response.

To understand this fully, we must explore the three primary parts of the brain involved in attraction and relationship decision-making: the reptilian complex, the limbic system, and the neocortex. Each plays a distinct role in how you perceive, feel, and choose a partner.

The reptilian complex, often called the “lizard brain,” is the most primitive part of the brain. It governs survival instincts—impulses like sexual desire, dominance, and immediate gratification. When you feel an intense, almost uncontrollable attraction to a man based solely on his physical presence or energy, this part of your brain is activated.

This is where many women must exercise caution. The reptilian brain does not discern character, morality, or spiritual alignment. It is concerned with chemistry, not covenant. It will pull you toward what feels good in the moment, even if it leads to long-term consequences.

Next is the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain. This is where bonding, attachment, and feelings of safety are formed. The limbic system is drawn to men who make you feel seen, heard, protected, and emotionally secure. Laughter, shared values, and emotional connection are processed here.

However, even the limbic system can be deceived. Trauma, past relationships, and childhood experiences can distort what “feels safe.” Sometimes, what feels familiar is not healthy—it is simply known. This is why some women repeatedly choose the same type of man, even when the outcome is painful.

The third and most advanced part is the neocortex—the center of reasoning, discernment, and higher thinking. This is where you evaluate a man’s purpose, mission, and spiritual alignment. The neocortex asks: Does he have vision? Does he honor God? Is he disciplined? Is he capable of leading a family?

A woman operating in her full relationship capacity does not allow the reptilian brain to lead. She acknowledges the feeling but submits it to the wisdom of the neocortex. She understands that attraction without alignment is a setup for heartbreak.

True discernment comes when all three parts of the brain are in order. The reptilian complex is controlled, the limbic system is healed, and the neocortex is engaged. This creates balance—where desire, emotion, and wisdom work together instead of against each other.

Spiritual alignment must be the foundation. A man who does not love God cannot lead you spiritually. If he lacks discipline in his own life, he cannot provide structure in a relationship. A kingdom-minded woman must seek a kingdom-minded man.

Sexual discipline is one of the clearest indicators of a man’s character. A man who pressures you for sex outside of marriage is operating from the flesh, not from spiritual maturity. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit, and without it, a relationship will lack stability.

The flesh—often associated with the lower impulses of the reptilian brain—can cloud judgment. It convinces you that chemistry is compatibility, when in reality, compatibility is built on shared values, vision, and purpose.

Cultural influences also play a role in attraction. The Media often glorifies toxic traits—dominance without discipline, confidence without character, and desire without responsibility. These images can shape what the mind perceives as attractive.

In contrast, a godly man may not always trigger the same immediate intensity, but he provides something far greater: peace, consistency, and spiritual covering. What is calm is often overlooked in favor of what is exciting.

Healing is essential in refining attraction. A woman who has done the inner work will begin to desire differently. She will no longer be drawn to chaos but to clarity, not to confusion but to consistency.

Your standards must be intentional. Attraction should not be the only requirement; it should be one of many. Character, integrity, faith, and purpose must outweigh physical appeal.

Community and accountability also influence your choices. Surrounding yourself with wise counsel can help you see what you might overlook when emotions are involved.

It is also important to recognize that attraction can grow. What begins as respect and admiration can develop into deep love when nurtured properly. Not every meaningful connection starts with intensity.

Ultimately, understanding your brain helps you understand your choices. You are not simply “falling” for someone—you are responding to internal systems that can be trained, healed, and guided.

When you align your mind, emotions, and spirit, your attraction will reflect your growth. You will choose not from impulse, but from intention.

And in that place of clarity, you will no longer ask, “Why am I attracted to certain men?”—because your standards, your healing, and your faith will already have the answer.

Personality and social psychology examine how individual traits and social contexts interact to shape human behavior, emotions, and relationships. At the center of this field lies the question of how people perceive themselves and others, regulate emotions, and navigate power within social structures. Human behavior is never purely individual; it is always embedded in relational and cultural systems.

Personality psychology focuses on enduring patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior. Traits such as extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, and conscientiousness influence how individuals respond emotionally to their environments. These traits shape not only internal experience but also social outcomes, including communication styles, conflict resolution, and leadership behavior.

Social psychology, in contrast, emphasizes situational forces and group dynamics. It investigates how social norms, roles, and expectations influence behavior, often in ways that contradict personal values. The interaction between personality and social context reveals that individuals are both agents and products of their environments.

Emotional responsiveness refers to the ability to perceive, interpret, and respond to emotional cues in oneself and others. Responsive emotions are not impulsive reactions but regulated, reflective responses grounded in awareness and empathy. This capacity is strongly associated with emotional intelligence and psychological maturity.

Psychological research suggests that emotional regulation is a key predictor of interpersonal effectiveness. Individuals who can modulate emotional intensity tend to communicate more clearly, de-escalate conflict, and maintain relational stability. Emotional control is therefore not repression but strategic self-governance.

The idea of “speaking softer, not louder” reflects a principle of psychological power. In many social interactions, especially conflicts, the individual who raises their voice is often signaling loss of control rather than authority. Calm communication, by contrast, projects confidence, self-assurance, and emotional mastery.

Power dynamics in communication reveal that emotional restraint often confers greater influence. Leaders who speak calmly and deliberately are perceived as more competent and trustworthy than those who rely on volume or aggression. Authority is psychologically associated with composure rather than dominance.

Social dominance theory explains how power hierarchies are maintained through behavioral and emotional cues. Individuals higher in social status are granted more emotional freedom, while marginalized individuals are often punished for emotional expression. This creates asymmetrical standards for whose emotions are considered legitimate.

From a personality perspective, individuals high in agreeableness and emotional stability tend to engage in softer communication styles. These traits facilitate cooperation and social bonding but may also expose individuals to exploitation in unequal power relationships.

Conversely, individuals high in narcissism or dominance-oriented traits often use louder or more forceful communication as a means of asserting control. Such behaviors are linked to fragile self-esteem and external validation rather than genuine confidence.

Responsive emotional behavior requires cognitive empathy, or the ability to understand others’ perspectives without being overwhelmed by emotional contagion. This allows individuals to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively, preserving agency in emotionally charged situations.

In social psychology, this aligns with the concept of self-monitoring, which refers to the capacity to regulate behavior according to social context. High self-monitors adjust their emotional expression strategically, enhancing social effectiveness and interpersonal influence.

Emotional restraint is also a form of symbolic power. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic capital suggests that subtle forms of behavior, such as speech patterns and emotional tone, function as markers of social class and authority. Speaking softly often signals cultural competence and elite social positioning.

Gender norms further complicate emotional power dynamics. Women are socially encouraged to be emotionally expressive, while men are rewarded for emotional control. This double standard positions emotional restraint as masculine authority and emotional openness as feminine vulnerability.

In professional settings, emotional discipline is often interpreted as leadership potential. Employees who regulate emotions effectively are more likely to be promoted and trusted with responsibility. Emotional intelligence thus operates as a form of psychological capital.

However, emotional suppression can become psychologically harmful when individuals are forced to silence legitimate emotional experiences. Chronic emotional inhibition is associated with stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, particularly in environments where power is unevenly distributed.

Responsive emotion should therefore be distinguished from emotional repression. Healthy emotional responsiveness involves acknowledgment without escalation, expression without domination, and regulation without denial. It is a balanced psychological posture rather than emotional withdrawal.

From a social power perspective, silence and softness can function as resistance strategies. Marginalized individuals often use calmness, restraint, and strategic emotional control to survive hostile environments. These behaviors reflect adaptive intelligence rather than passivity.

In conflict situations, psychological studies show that lower emotional intensity leads to higher persuasion outcomes. Individuals are more likely to change their attitudes when confronted with calm reasoning rather than emotional pressure.

Ultimately, personality and social psychology reveal that power is not only structural but emotional. The ability to regulate affect, communicate calmly, and remain psychologically grounded constitutes a subtle yet profound form of social influence.

Responsive emotions and soft communication represent psychological sovereignty. They reflect inner control, self-awareness, and emotional literacy in a world structured by power, hierarchy, and social performance. Speaking softer, not louder, becomes a form of embodied authority rooted in emotional intelligence.

This field integrates biology, psychology, physics, and computational sciences to address questions about perception, memory, consciousness, and disease. The scope of neuroscience ranges from molecular studies of neurons to neuroimaging, brain–computer interface technology, and neuromodulation therapies (StudyRaid, 2024).


2. Neuroscience and Black Communities

Historically, neuroscience research has often lacked representation from people of African ancestry, which has contributed to knowledge gaps in understanding the prevalence, onset, and progression of neurological and psychiatric disorders among Black populations (Wolfe, 2024). Initiatives such as the African Ancestry Neuroscience Research Initiative (AANRI), a collaboration between Morgan State University, the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, and Duke University, aim to bridge this gap. AANRI studies postmortem brain tissue from African American donors to better understand how genetics, epigenetics, and environmental stressors—such as systemic racism—affect brain health (AANRI, 2024). Findings suggest that while genetic variation explains much of the difference in brain profiles, environmental exposures significantly influence neural function and gene expression, underscoring the importance of culturally inclusive neuroscience research (HBCU News, 2024).


3. Prominent Black Neuroscientists and Their Contributions

Emery N. Brown, M.D., Ph.D.

One of the most prominent Black neuroscientists globally, Emery N. Brown is renowned for his expertise in computational neuroscience and anesthesiology. He has developed advanced statistical models for analyzing neuronal data and pioneered research into the neural mechanisms of anesthesia, redefining clinical approaches and safety protocols (MIT News, 2023). His work has not only advanced brain science but has also saved lives in surgical contexts worldwide.

Uraina S. Clark, Ph.D.

Clark’s research uses functional MRI to examine how life stressors—such as discrimination and chronic illness—affect brain structure and function, particularly in African American communities. Her work links social determinants of health to neural outcomes, highlighting the interplay between lived experience and brain physiology (Clark, 2022).

Sherilynn Black, Ph.D.

Black focuses on the neurobiology of emotion regulation. Using optogenetics, her work demonstrates how precise stimulation of cortical neurons can produce antidepressant-like effects and restore coordinated activity across emotion-related brain networks (Black, 2019).

Crystal C. Watkins Johansson, M.D., Ph.D.

A neuropsychiatrist at Johns Hopkins University, Johansson specializes in geriatric psychiatry and neuroimaging. Her work on cognitive health in aging African Americans has advanced the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and led to patented treatments for diabetic gastrointestinal dysfunction (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2021).


4. How Neuroscience Has Changed the World

Neuroscience has revolutionized medicine through technologies like deep brain stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and brain–computer interfaces (BCIs), enabling communication and motor control for paralyzed individuals (FT, 2025). In education, neuroscience informs teaching strategies by explaining how the brain learns and retains information. In ethics and law, neuroethics addresses concerns about “cognitive liberty” and the protection of brain data.
